All Septic Tanks Work On The Same Principles

Here at Walsh Waste we take great pride in helping you maintain a working septic tank system.

Waste from your home enters the tank here.

There is usually an inspection chamber here allowing us to check for correct flow along the main sewage outlet from the property. It can also be used as a rodding point to clear blockages. A T Pipe on the inlet forces solids to sink to the bottom of the tank, preventing them from entering the percolation area. Here solids are broken down a layer of scum forms on the top and this bacteria helps break down the waste.

Tips to Managing Your Septic Tank

Have your septic tank emptied every 12–18 months, depending on household size and usage. Regular emptying prevents sludge build-up, which can block the system and cause costly overflows or environmental damage. Your septic system relies on healthy bacteria to break down waste. Avoid pouring bleach, antibacterial cleaners, or harsh chemicals down drains — these can disrupt the balance and reduce treatment efficiency.

Treated waste water then flows through to the percolation area, where it soaks away into the earth.

Any solids that are insoluble stay at the bottom of the tank as sludge. The build-up of sludge in the tank is what needs to be removed annually in order for the tank to run efficiently.

The percolation area is the final treatment stage, where filtered water soaks naturally into the soil. Healthy soil bacteria complete the purification process, protecting groundwater quality. To maintain it, keep the area clear of heavy traffic and deep-rooted plants that could interfere with the drainage system.

The inspection chamber plays a crucial role in maintaining your septic tank system. It allows us to easily monitor the flow of waste through the main sewage outlet from your property. This chamber also serves as a rodding point, enabling us to clear any blockages that may arise.

Additionally, the T-pipe on the tanks inlet directs solids to settle at the bottom of the tank, ensuring they don’t enter the percolation area. Within the tank, solids begin top break down naturally. A layer of scum forms on top, while beneficial bacteria help decompose the waste, keeping the system functioning smoothly.

Measure the distance from where your truck will be parked to your septic tank.

Additional Information for Septic Tank Access

Ensure there is a clear and accessible pathway for the truck to park near the septic tank. This is crucial, as the truck needs to have enough space to pump out the waste without obstacles. The ground should be firm and free from large rocks or debris. Soft or uneven ground can cause issues when parking, particularly with larger trucks. Make sure the access route and area around the tank are free from overhanging trees, roots, or dense shrubs, as these can obstruct equipment and restrict movement.
